AFOQT and TBAS: How They Relate to Pilot Selection

How the AFOQT and the TBAS relate in rated selection, what each measures, and why we do not simulate the TBAS or predict a PCSM score.

Two different assessments

The AFOQT is a paper-based aptitude battery covering verbal, quantitative, perceptual and aviation-knowledge material. You can prepare for it, and the whole of this site exists to help you do that.

The Test of Basic Aviation Skills is a separate, computer-based assessment of psychomotor and multi-tasking ability — tracking, hand-eye coordination, dividing attention between concurrent tasks. It measures something the AFOQT does not attempt to, and it is administered separately.

For rated selection, results from both feed into a combined measure alongside flying experience. The practical consequence is that a strong AFOQT does not by itself make you competitive, and a weaker one is not necessarily fatal — the components interact.

We do not publish the formula, the weightings or a predicted score

You will find sites offering a PCSM calculator or claiming to predict your composite. We are not one of them. The weighting between components is not something we have verified against a current official source, and a predicted score built on a guessed formula is worse than no prediction, because it invites you to plan around it.

Your recruiter, ROTC cadre or OTS point of contact can tell you what your pathway requires and how the components combine for it.

Why we do not simulate the TBAS

Three reasons, and they are worth being explicit about because plenty of products claim otherwise.

The task is psychomotor. It involves continuous tracking and divided attention under specific hardware conditions. A browser-based approximation would measure your mouse, your frame rate and your screen as much as your ability — and would give you a number that felt meaningful and was not.

We have no verified specification. Building a simulation would mean inventing the details, and we would be unable to tell you which parts were real.

A bad simulation is actively harmful. A candidate who scores poorly on an invented psychomotor test may conclude they are unsuited to a rated career on the basis of nothing at all. That is a serious thing to get wrong.

What you can usefully do

For the AFOQT, prepare properly — that part is entirely within your control and responds well to work. The rated-relevant subtests and the order to approach them are set out on the pilot pathway page.

For the TBAS, the honest advice is that general familiarity with the kind of task helps a little and there is no established way to train it substantially in a short period. Arrive rested and unhurried; fatigue affects psychomotor performance more than it affects a knowledge test.

For flying experience, that is a longer-term matter and one your commissioning source can advise on properly.

Why the two assessments measure different things on purpose

A written aptitude battery and a psychomotor assessment are not redundant, and the reason is worth understanding because it explains why a strong AFOQT does not settle the question.

The AFOQT establishes whether you have the cognitive foundation the training pipeline assumes: can you work quickly and accurately under time pressure, do you retain technical material, can you reason spatially. Those predict how you cope with academics and procedures.

The TBAS addresses something a paper test cannot reach: whether you can track a moving target with your hands while your attention is divided across concurrent tasks. That is closer to the physical act of flying, and it is largely independent of how well you did on a vocabulary section. People who are strong on one are not reliably strong on the other, which is precisely why both exist.

Flying experience enters as a third input, and it is the one component you cannot improve inside a study period.

What this means for how you spend your time

Concentrate on the component that both matters and moves. The AFOQT is heavily preparable — the aviation knowledge subtest in particular closes almost entirely in a fortnight for a candidate starting from nothing, and the perceptual subtests respond to daily repetition. That is where effort converts into outcome.

The psychomotor component does not respond to short-term training in any well-established way, and treating it as something to grind at is more likely to produce anxiety than improvement. Arrive rested; fatigue degrades psychomotor performance more sharply than it degrades recall.

The failure mode we would warn against is a candidate deferring their AFOQT preparation because they are worried about a component they cannot train. The preparable part is the part to prepare.

Sequencing

Candidates commonly take the AFOQT first, since it is the broader gate and the one that most rewards preparation. Whether that is right for your pathway, and how the timing interacts with your application deadlines, is a question for your recruiter rather than for a website.

One thing that does transfer: the AFOQT’s Instrument Comprehension and Aviation Information subtests build vocabulary and spatial familiarity that make the aviation context less foreign generally. That is a genuine if modest benefit, and it is the honest extent of the overlap.
