Take this before you study anything
A diagnostic taken after a week of revision measures what you just revised, not where you stand. If you have already started studying, that is fine — just read the result knowing it is flattered in whatever you have been working on.
What the diagnostic is for
One thing before the detail: this is the only page on the site we would tell every candidate to use, regardless of pathway, runway or starting point. Everything else depends on what it tells you.
This is a measurement instrument, not a rehearsal. It samples across all 11 practisable subtests in roughly forty-five minutes and produces one thing you cannot get any other way: an ordered list of your weakest areas, before your own assumptions have had a chance to interfere.
Most candidates are wrong about where their points are going. People who did well in mathematics at school assume the quantitative subtests are safe and discover their algebra has quietly decayed. People who read widely assume Reading Comprehension is free and lose points to inference questions. Almost everyone without a flying background underestimates how much Aviation Information and Instrument Comprehension will cost them, because those subtests test knowledge you either have or do not, with no general aptitude to fall back on.
Why it is short on purpose
A full-length exam is >250 questions and several hours. As a first step that is the wrong tool: it costs an afternoon, it exhausts you, and it produces roughly the same weak-area ranking a forty-five minute sample gives you. Save the long form for rehearsal once you know what you are working on.
The trade-off is precision. With a handful of items per subtest, one unlucky guess moves a subtest percentage a long way. Treat the output as a rough ordering rather than a measurement, and if two subtests come out close, treat them as tied rather than ranked. That caveat is printed on the report itself, not buried here.
How to read the result
You will get accuracy overall and by subtest, a pacing breakdown showing where you ran out of time, a count of unanswered items, and your weakest areas in order. What you will not get is an AFOQT score — the conversion tables that would make that possible are not published, so nobody outside the Air Force can produce one. Once you have the ranking, three questions turn it into a plan:
- Which of these actually count for me? A non-rated applicant can ignore Block Counting and Instrument Comprehension entirely. A pilot applicant cannot. Cross off anything that does not feed a composite you need.
- Which of the rest move fastest? Aviation Information, Word Knowledge, Table Reading and Block Counting respond quickly. Reading Comprehension does not. Work the fast ones first so early effort produces visible progress.
- How long do I actually have? A two-week runway and a three-month runway justify completely different plans. See how long to study.
Re-take it on a schedule, not on a feeling
Every two weeks is about right. More often than that and you begin measuring your memory of these specific questions rather than your ability, and the improvement you see will not survive a form you have not seen.
Between diagnostics, work single subtests with the drills in the practice library, keep recall warm with the daily set, and use the weekly test as your trend line. When you want a genuine rehearsal rather than a measurement, take a full-length exam under real conditions.
What the ranking usually reveals
Patterns recur often enough to be worth naming, partly so you recognise yours and partly so an unexpected result does not read as a mistake.
The confident mathematician. Strong at school maths, assumes the quantitative side is handled, and discovers that Math Knowledge has decayed into half-remembered rules while Arithmetic Reasoning is fine. Recall problem, not a reasoning problem.
The wide reader. Comfortable with dense text, loses marks anyway on inference questions by picking the reasonable answer over the supported one. A technique problem that closes quickly once named.
The candidate with no aviation background. Reasonable across the cognitive subtests and close to floor on Aviation Information and Instrument Comprehension. This looks alarming and is the best possible result, because it is the fastest-closing gap on the whole battery.
Everyone, on the speed subtests. Table Reading and Block Counting are unlike anything most people have sat, and a poor first showing says almost nothing about your ceiling on them.
Conditions that make the result mean something
- One sitting, no pausing, no phone.
- Paper and pencil for working. No calculator — the real test does not allow one.
- Do not look anything up mid-test, however tempting.
- Answer every question. There is no guessing penalty, so a blank is strictly worse than a guess.
If you interrupt it, the result still tells you something, but the pacing data becomes meaningless — and pacing is half of what this exam actually measures. Full structure and timings are on the test format page.
